  1. Mental Health and ASD- Bridging the Gap

Comments Off on Mental Health and ASD- Bridging the Gap

This workshop will provide an overview of mental health issues that co-occur in those diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).  Dr. Cummings will discuss a variety of mental health disorders, including, (but not limited to) ADHD, Anxiety, Schizophrenia, Depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Bipolar Disorder, and Mood Disorders.  Differential diagnosis is used to help determine if the issues presented by the individual are attributed to their diagnosis of autism or if a possible mental health issue exists.   Dr. Cummings will also explore the role of commonly used psychiatric medications, as well as their pros and cons to the individual.  This workshop will also discuss how to interface with the individual’s mental health provider to maximize treatment outcomes. In addition, Dr. Cummings will discuss the APIC Program (Access to Psychiatry Through Intermediate Care).  Established in 2014 by Dr. Cummings and APIC’s Clinical Director, Janelle Van Cleeve, the APIC team provides medical and social resources to families in crisis at no charge.  By linking families with these pivotal services, the individual in need can potentially avoid hospitalization by addressing four key areas.  These areas include medical needs, alternative behavioral health therapies, improving the home environment, and providing breaks for caregivers.  This workshop is geared for individuals with ASD, parents, and professionals.

In addition, we are pleased to announce that we will be offering ASHA CEU credit through the Speech-Language-Hearing Association of Western New York (SHAWNY), and New York State Education Department Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy State Board Approved Continuing Competency Units for OTs/COTAs/PTs/PTAs through Associated Physical and Occupational Therapists, PLLC (APOT)!  Both SHAWNY and APOT are co-sponsors of this workshop.  The cost and CEU credit information are listed below:
