St. Mary’s School for the Deaf

St. Mary’s School for the Deaf is hiring a long term substitute 10 month position for this school year (2017-2018). Knowledge and understanding of ASL or sign language is a plus but not required.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following:

(1) Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree AND

(2) NYS certification for speech pathologist

(3) Eligibility for NYS certification as a Teacher of the Deaf AND; we would consider CFY (clinical fellowship year

(4) Commitment to the School’s Total Communication Philosophy and the ability to communicate with deaf persons using American Sign Language (ASL) and finger spelling, plus the ability to pass the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI).

NOTE: Employees in this classification will be required to complete the SLPI requirements pursuant to Board Policy. The School may also require employees in this classification to complete successful training in behavior management programs including but not limited to TCI (Therapeutic Crisis Intervention) which will be provided by St. Mary’s School for the Deaf.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES Plans and prepares for therapy sessions following IEP goals and curriculum guidelines Instructs Students using Total Communication Confers with teachers, parents, testing specialists and other administrators t develop individual education plans for students; Encourages students to participate in group discussions and activities Prepares, administers and scores evaluations and records results Maintains documentation of therapeutic progress following IEP benchmarks; Meets and confers with parents and with supervisor to discuss students’ academic and behavioral attitudes and achievements Assists in selecting appropriate learning materials, therapeutic matters and evaluation instruments Participate in curriculum development Maintains updated lesson plans and prescribed by the curriculum and therapeutic IEP goals; Intercedes in emergency situations as required Attends department and faculty meetings Performs other duties as requested or assigned.
