Workshop Description
Many individuals who use AAC systems have language disabilities in conjunction with their inability to
speak clearly. Some may struggle with the most basic rules of interaction and conversation, while others
have difficulties developing and composing messages independently. For individuals within school
settings, these difficulties have significant educational impacts.
This workshop
* challenges some of the practices in AAC intervention that focus on extended vocabulary rather than core vocabulary
* addresses issues that are clearly maddening for many therapists, teachers, and family members provides simple strategies that place the focus on talking with core vocabulary and promoting long-
* term generative language development
Strategies with materials are presented that show how to promote language development in four areas: early communication participation, vocabulary versatility, sentence building, and conversational give and take.
Participants will review principles of motor learning in relationship to language development and use of core vocabulary. Small group activities will be used to help participants learn how to engage in Aided Language Input and Language Modeling. All participants will receive a copy of a manual
communication board with 300+ core words for Aided Language Input and Language Modeling.
