Good News! NYSUT's resolution #35, pertaining to the recognition of nationally certified school-based Speech-Language Pathologists, has passed! The attached letter was hand carried to the Representative Assembly by Wendy Hord, NYSUT representative. While this news is encouraging, we need to continue the dialogue with our Union representatives and encourage them to include this proposal in district negotiations. If your district provides a stipend for ASHA certification or state licensure, please contact Stephanie Verrico (verrico@buffalo.edu)

NYSUT SLP Resolution Passes
NYSUT Resolution Becomes Policy
The Support of Recognition of Nationally Certified Speech-Language Pathologists, resolution #35 has passed and is now NYSUT policy. (See the language here. Go to page 34.)
In addition, occupational therapists and physical therapists were added in a friendly amendment, to this resolution.
Thanks to Mindy Karten Bornemann (former NYSSLHA Schools Director) and her colleagues at United Federal Teachers for their months of work--meeting and discussing this issue with NYSUT officials and the Health Care Committee.
What Does this Mean?
It has taken more than 18 months to have this resolution become NYSUT policy and it is a great accomplishment. However, in today's fiscal environment, school districts do not have the money to provide financial incentives to SLPs. It is a step in the right direction. When the fiscal environment improves, the policy will already be in place.
Meanwhile, NYSSLHA will pursue other non-fiscal opportunities to have SLPs included in the programs that are now available to teachers."

Dear Colleagues,
Do you know that the NYSUT Representative Assembly is drawing near? On April 29th, delegates from each of our districts will be in attendance to vote on proposed amendments to the Constitution and Bylaws, proposed resolutions and other business. One resolution of interest to school-based Speech-Language Pathologists is #35 (page 34). Please consider printing out the attached form letter and giving it to your Union representative to ask for his/her support. I believe a grassroots advocacy effort could potentially make a difference in our paychecks!
Professionally,
Stephanie Verrico, CCC-SLP Letter to be printed out and signed

Three Audiology students (Jessica Loson, Virginia Best, and Sneha Hinduja) from UB?s Department of Communicative Disorders and Sciences generously volunteered their time at the Williamsville South High School Wellness Fair in March. Together they helped educate students about safe listening practices with regard to MP3 players and other popular technologies. In the process, they also helped to promote the professions of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology by distributing career information courtesy of ASHA.
